Reclaimed oak floor boards

Reclaimed oak floor boards – these were found on Gumtree rather than ebay. These are for our downstairs bedroom; it has an external door out to the garden so a wooden floor seems more practical than carpet. The floorboards are modern rather than very old floorboards – with a tongue and groove connection system  -so…

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls

These octagonal Fired Earth marble tiles were second-hand although they hadn’t been used: they were left-overs from somebody else’s project. I saw them advertised on ebay and bought them for £49 – a fraction of the price of buying new from the shop. I bought them for the utility room but they were so nice that…

Tricky getting around the house today

Tricky getting around the house today as the hallway, which connects all of the downstairs rooms, is out of bounds as the tiles have been laid… Also had to remove the cupboard door to get food for dinner as they now don’t open!

Catwalk kitchen

The area formerly known as our kitchen has had the floor drilled out and a screed put down to level it. Our daughter likes walking along the boards – she says it’s like a cat walk at a fashion show! This area will henceforth be known as the hallway  – and we’re looking forward to seeing…

Underfloor heating

The warm water pipes were laid on top of the Celotex insulation. One disadvantage of underfloor heating is that you have to plan exactly where everything is going to go in advance and you can’t really change your mind afterwards – you don’t really want heating under cupboards that you are using to store food…

Has the floor survived the hail?

We were hoping for good weather for the laying of the concrete floor downstairs but the concrete has been poured over the rubble and we then had a hail-storm. The temporary plumbing for our washing machine is the main feature at the moment, but insulation will be laid on top of this floor and then…

Utility room floor

Meanwhile – back inside the old part of the house, the tiles have been laid in our utility room. I’m really pleased with the way they have used lots of the tile offcuts – it looks great and avoids waste. On the other hand, we can’t walk on these tiles until tomorrow and the sink…

Timber frame joists are added

The walls of our timber frame eco-house extension have been extended up. This is as high up as the walls are allowed to reach – the eaves needed to be at this height to get planning permission. From here upwards it will be the sloping roof – it’s a bit like an attic conversion that’s planned…

Choosing a kitchen floor

After much deliberation followed by an impetuous ebay bid we have made a decision on the kitchen tiles. I’d originally hoped to have reclaimed quarry tiles for the floor of our kitchen but the size of the kitchen makes this a little tricky. We need around 20m2 of tiles if we tiled the whole…

Fired Earth Marble Floor Tiles

I’ve just bought some beautiful octagonal marble floor tiles on ebay. They’re from Fired Earth so they are really high quality (and very thick) and would normally be well out of our budget. They are left overs from somebody else’s renovation and brand new even though I can’t see them still on the Fired Earth website so…
